Clay Classes

Beginning Wheel (Age 14+)               

For ages 14+.  This class is an introduction to working with clay on the potter’s wheel. Each student will have their own wheel to work with.  You will learn the basic techniques of wheel-work and explore the cup and cylinder.   This class is for individuals with little to no experience.

Date: Thursday, September 7th – October 26th     

Time: 6:00-8:00 pm

Beginning Wheel 2.0 -- 7 week session

For ages 14+.  This class is an introduction to working with clay on the potter’s wheel. Each student will have their own wheel to work with.  You will learn the basic techniques of wheel-work and explore the cup and cylinder.  You will also experiment with a variety of glazes and techniques to finish your pots. This class is for individuals with little to no experience.

Intermediate Wheel: Handles and Sprig

For ages 14+.  This intermediate wheel class will focus expanding your basic wheel techniques.  Activate your pots with sprigs and stamps! Enjoy learning how to make your handles more comfy!  This class is intended for students with a strong basic knowledge of throwing.

Special Topics: Reduction Wood Fire

For ages 14+. The class will be taught by Lars Volts with a focus on his specialty: Reduction Wood Fire which results in rich colors and surfaces.  This class will consist of lecture, discussion, and demonstration. Additional timeout side of class will be required to prep and fire the wood kiln.  Wood Fire Dates Oct. 19 – Oct. 22, 2017.  This class is intended for students with a basic ceramic knowledge.

Beginning Hand Building: Pinch Pots                  

For ages 14+.  This class is an introduction to working with clay.  Each student will develop basic hand building techniques with a focus on the ancient technique pinch pots.  This class is for individuals with little to no experience.

Conversations in Clay (Age 14+)  

This is an advanced class for students who are confident working independently.  We will work with a variety of artists to survey advanced ceramic techniques.  Please note the day of the weeks will rotate as stated below.

For all Clay Classes:

  • Bring a small bucket, towel, and pottery tool kit* to class.

  • Tuition includes one 12 pound bag of clay, open studio time, 36" shelf space and some firing costs.

NOTES:

  • *Pottery tool kits as well as additional clay and glass supplies may be purchased at the Ceramics Center.

  • Unless otherwise noted, class participants may be charged firing fees for extra work made during the session.


Glass Classes

 

Intro to Glass Fusing (Age 14+) - 4 week class

This is an introductory class in glass fusing.  You will learn the fundamentals of glass fusing: cutting glass, laying it out in creative ways, and fusing it together to create unique designs and projects.  No glass experience is required.

Advanced Glass--7 week session

This class is ideal for students with strong basic fusing skills who are self-motivated and have several projects in mind. New techniques will be introduced such as frit, and more complex slumping methods. Fusing and slumping experience is required.

Glass for Everyone (Age 14+)

This is a class for any level. During the first six weeks, we will concentrate on the basics of glass fusing (cutting and firing temperatures) and different techniques of decorating glass while creating small projects. The last two weeks will be for larger projects of your choosing. No glass experience is required.
